There is no better feeling than getting a brand new pet that loves and adores you just as much as you fawn over it. The two most popular types of pets are, of course, dogs and cats, with each providing its own advantages and disadvantages. While the care of these animals is often very different, that does not mean they do not share some similarities, particularly when it comes to their basic medical care.  If you have just got a cat or a dog for the very first time it is vital that you make sure they have been desexed.

Why Pet Desexing Is So Important

It is important to understand that in a domestic environment, it is important that virtually all pets are desexed, Cats and dogs, being the most popular pets, therefore it makes sense that most of the information is about them. Still, unplanned pregnancies are dangerous to all pets and can be even more of a financial burden on the owner as well. In addition to this, there are many unnecessary diseases and conditions that your pet will be at risk for if they are left with these sexual organs. In general, it is simply safer for you and your pet to keep them away from this possibility. If you do intend to breed your pets, then plan well ahead of time and do not buy a regular dog or cat.

How To Know If Your Pet Is Desexed

Most of the time if you buy a dog or cat that is above a certain age they will already have been desexed. It is important that if you buy or are given your pet from someone you know—rather than an authorised breeder or pet shop—that you ask them. You also shouldn't just take their word for it, they should have some kind of documentation to indicate when and where the pet was desexed. If you can't find out whether or not the pet has been desexed then simply assume it hasn't been and take it to a vet.

When To Get It Done

Dogs generally need to be desexed around five months old while cats can be done about one month earlier. Pet desexing vets will have specific information for your breeds. It is very important to always get animal desexing done by a licensed veterinarian. It is a very simple and safe procedure but only when it is done by someone with the correct qualifications. While it can be tough to put a new pet through this, it is for their overall benefit and they will forget about it in the long run.
